PICC Line Insertion Services

The Infusion Clinic's PICC line insertion service was introduced in May 2007, filling a longtime community need.

The PICC lines are peripherally inserted central catheters placed in the veins of the upper arms. The tip of the catheter lies just outside the heart in a large blood vessel with high blood flow. Lidocaine is used to numb the insertion site and patients report there is very little discomfort during the procedure.

Bedside ultrasound is used for the insertion of these lines by registered nurses who have specialized training.

PICC lines require weekly dressing changes and flushing by a registered nurse. Lab work can be drawn from a PICC line and may also be used for infusion of intravenous fluids and medications, blood products, antibiotics, and chemotherapy. They can be inserted for short- or longterm use and are easily removed when treatment is completed.
